"[This small building] easily accommodates a crowd but doesn't feel empty when you are alone. Essentially a single room equipped with bathing and cooking amenities, the structure's design makes it ideal for day-to-day use and for larger get-togethers. [It's] the perfect low key companion for the pool…[where] function meets good looks without feeling forced."

Goals

  • Create a Pool House that could serve as a guest house and a delightful spot for summer dinners and events.

Challenges

  • Work within the footprint and height established by an old ice barn originally on the site.
  • Integrate the building into the lush New England landscape.

Design Response

  • Designed a simple and iconic form, using windows and doors to establish formal lines and shapes, rather than simply cut openings.
  • Integrated every detail, from bead-and-board panels to brackets for candle sconces.
  • Projected a tall bay window on the façade facing the meadow, fitted with a window seat to capture views and provide a restful place to sit.
  • Designed exterior spaces, including a spacious shower/changing room.
